Day Camps Offer 2011 Summer Fun For Kids

There are quite a few ways for kids to stay active this summer 2011, thanks to several local day camps.
The city of Walnut sponsors week-long sessions for Camp Movin’ & Groovin’, which is suitable for youngsters ages 7 to 14. There are three separate camps available: Getting Started (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.), In the Groove (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Cool Down (Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.).
In the Groove is $108 per camper per week, and $100 for each additional child within the same immediate family. Activities will range from swimming lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays to group sports. The excursions, which include going to such places at Knotts Berry Farm and Legoland, happen Wednesdays and Fridays.
Getting Started is $25 per camper each week, and is perfect for kids who need to be supervised for just a few hours early in the morning. During Getting Started, campers will gain vital information on how to make healthy breakfasts, go on walks, and play inside. Cool Down is $35 per camper each week, and gives kids the opportunities to watch G movies, do arts and crafts, and use the equipment at the Teen Center.

Does your child love video games? At the one week Video Game Design workshop, kids can design and build their own Windows-based games and then take them home. For ages 9 – 13. Starting August 8. 9 a.m. – Noon. $199. Registration is available online.
For the more science inclined, there are several weeklong Mad Science workshops coming to Suzanne Park this summer. Cost for each week is $135, and there is a $30 material fee due to the instructor on the first day of each camp. All Mad Science workshops are for kids 5 – 12. Mad Machines and Red Hot Robots will let kids discover how we use machines in our daily lives, and they’ll also get the chance to design their own machines with wedges, screws, levers, and more. Each camper will make their own robot, which they can take home. July 18 – July 22, 9 a.m. to Noon.
Space and Spies is all about the solar system, with campers learned about comets, stars, planets, and more. The spy part comes into play when kids make their own secret code breaker, which they can then take home. August 8 – August 12. 9 a.m. to Noon.
Budding dancers will enjoy Dance Camp, held at the Walnut Gymnasium. Open to boys and girls six and older at all levels, campers will learn basic skills and choreograph their own routines. The experience will culminate with an evening show. $75 for the first child, $55 for a second child, and $45 for a third, all in the same immediate family. Fans of anime will enjoy the Young Rembrandts Anime Cartoon Drawing workshop, held at the Walnut Senior Center. For kids 6 – 12, the mini-artists will create their own Anime characters, and come home with their very own large comic book. August 9- August 11, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $53. Learn badminton from a champion during the Badminton Summer Camp. World champion and Olympic medalist Ying Chen will instruct kids 5 – 15 on the fundamentals of the game. $85 for the first child, $75 for the second, and $65 for each additional, with all children from the same immediate family. This camp meets at the Walnut Gymnasium. August 1 through August 3. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register, visit the city of Walnut website.
Camp Crawdad is for kids 6 to 12, and is a way to spend the morning outside in the fresh air. The second session starts July 18 and ends August 11, and is held at Lemon Creek Park Mondays and Wednesdays and Suzanne Park Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is no camp on Fridays, holidays and rainy days. The fee is $25 per child per session.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, campers will have the chance to swim at Walnut High School, from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. The cost is $1 per camper, and staff will walk kids to the pool and supervise them on site. They will also have the chance to go on excursions for additional fees, including SPLASH! in La Mirada, Ringling Brothers & Barnum Bailey Circus at the Honda Center, and Discovery Science Center.
